Over on the Fudebakublog I wrote about the difficulty of drawing spiders given that I can’t/won’t actually look at them properly. For the cover of the Fudebakudo book, I built the spider separately — and recently found this front-view test shot (blue background) in a forgotten directory. Once it looked good enough, I dropped it into the main scene, where it functions as a “reveal gag” on the back cover of the book. Wrapping the cover illustration over the spine to have the reveal on the back was directly inspired by the covers of the Giles annuals (British cartoonist Ronald “Carl” Giles) that I admired as a youngster.
